Colour Contrast Theory with Dominik Modlinski

Class Description:

The workshop is aimed for beginner and intermediate artists who wish to expand their knowledge of colour theory using either oil and acrylic painting techniques while enhancing their perception and creative visualization. Dominik will address the principals of colour theory using just three primary colours that strengthen student’s understanding of correct colour ratios and principals of colour contrasts. The simplicity of this approach will give students the freedom and understanding of colour mixing, which leads to harmonious and successful paintings.

• During the course of the workshop Dominik will demonstrate how to mix unlimited colour hues using few of the colour contrasts principals. There will be emphasis of the economy of brush movements to keep colours clean and saturated while traveling from one hue to another.
• Together colour contrasts constitute the fundamental resource of colour design, either in stand-alone or dynamic duos combinations. Each contrast is unique in character and in its visual and expressive effect. Understanding each colour contrast creates unlimited creative opportunities both in design and symbolic aspect of painting.
• The aim of this workshop is to inspire students to compose artwork based on strong colour contrast choices which are carried diligently throughout the creative process resulting in bold and colourful works of art.
• Students will leave the workshop with many colour theory exercises charts, which they can display in their studio for quick reference.

Oct 22 and 23
Saturday and Sunday, 10am – 4pm

What to bring:
You are welcome to bring oil or acrylics to the workshop.

Paint:
2 x 40ml tubes of paint in the following colours:
Cadmium yellow lemon
Quinacridone red
Phthalo blue green shade
Titanium white

Mediums:
For Oil: Walnut oil  ( non toxic )
For brush cleaning indoors – non toxic TURPENOID or similar non toxic thinners such as GAMSOL

For acrylic: Polymer medium

GROUNDS:
Primed painting service with acrylic gesso 12″x16″ or larger.
Bring 20 surfaces to paint colour exercises on.
Such as:
-Hardboard
-MDF board
-Canvas board
-Arches Oil paper
-But the best and most economical is heavy drawing paper primed with acrylic gesso. Please prep your paper with gesso before the workshop.

Lupine will provide:
Paper towels
Freezer paper for your palette
Pencil
Ruler
Brushes (but feel free to bring your own favourites)
Painters tape
Exacto knives/Scissors
Rags
Water containers
Table top easels

Who is this class for:
Level 2
Focus: Skill Development
Adults only please. This Level 2 class is designed for those who have been introduced to the medium and tools and seeking continued learning and practicing. Skill development will be the focus. These classes are ideal to be taken repeatedly for continued practice.
