Watercolour 2 – The Indecisive Moment: Capturing Portraits in Watercolour

Class Description:

Quick paintings using watercolour can help us to create interesting, loose, unplanned images. If photography can capture a fleeting “Decisive Moment”, formal oil painting might capture an aggregate of Decisive Moments. Quick sketches in watercolour might provide a glimpse of something in between; an Indecisive Moment. A moment, perhaps, that we can’t completely control. The fluid and suggestive nature of watercolour is capable of capturing an ambiguous essence, if not the most accurate likeness, of a person.

During the first class, we will work on likeness and review measuring angles and proportions of the face. But we soon move into more lyrical representations of human form using the suggestive qualities of watercolour paint, where likeness is less sacred.

“Really enjoyed the watercolour class with Clive! He’s a talented artist and teacher…highly recommend it.”
-Cindy M.
